Howdy from Texas! I hope the start of watermelon
season is going well for all of our friends out there.
These past few months have been quiet for Queen
Makensie as there were no promotions during the
holidays, though she did prepare for the National
Watermelon Association’s convention in Lake
Tahoe. The scenery there was spectacular as the
snow was piled up all over the town, in the trees, and
on the mountains. The hotel was cozy and inviting
and all of the NWA staff did a wonderful job of planning and executing another successful event.
Makensie and I want to wish all of the young ladies who competed in the pageant many blessed
and successful years ahead. You are all talented and
beautiful and will do well in life. Congratulations to
Madison Laney, the new 2017 National Watermelon
Association Queen. You will have a wonderful, busy
year and we wish you and Miss Eleanor the best.
Makensie also wanted to relay this message to our
members: “I had an amazing experience while in
Lake Tahoe, and experiencing real snow and all of
God’s creation made it that much more enjoyable.
Getting to see everyone again and reconnect with my
other state queens just reminded me why I loved this
industry and organization from the beginning. The
grand scale of the whole convention was marvelous
and getting to bring my Dad along to see what I do
and what I enjoy about the Watermelon industry was
the cherry on top. I can’t thank my sponsors enough
for supporting me this past year, as well as the whole
Texas Watermelon Association. I am excited to see
what is in store for me after this journey and know
that I am blessed to call everyone I had the pleasure
of meeting this past year, a friend.”
Thank you, Makensie, for being adaptable, hard-working, and a good traveling companion. The
association wishes you the very best, and we hope
you will keep in touch and come back to visit during
Now we look forward to a new season, and hopefully one in which every grower and industry member sees success. Miss Chloe Brown, the 2017 TWA
Queen, and I will be going to Atlanta to queen training in April and we look forward to a busy time of
in- store promotions, expos, festivals, and hopefully
a school visit or two in the coming months.
Until next time, God bless you and yours.
