It’s summertime in Georgia! Harvest is gearing up, and your association and Georgia Queen Jennifer Eadie have been busy building
anticipation for that sweet treat – Georgia watermelon!
We’ve had a busy and exciting spring as we head into the heart of
watermelon season. Jennifer has been in and out of state promoting
our growers and Georgia product. In March, we attended the annual
training and communications seminar in Orlando with the National
Watermelon Promotion Board. Jennifer brushed up on her interview
technique, messaging creation and campaign, and even learned how to
do some great on-site watermelon recipes. THANK YOU NWPB for
your dedication to the program! From there, Queen Jennifer headed
to Valdosta Sam’s Club with Chef Poon to bring some zing to a Sam’s
Club Re-Opening! They had a great time talking about watermelon’s
nutritional value and showing off Chef’s carving skills. THANK YOU
Melon 1 for having us!
Queen Jennifer also joined with several other state associations for
the Cooper River Bridge Run promotion in Charleston, SC. The
queens and their crew visited several Bi-Lo locations during their
stay and handed out juicy, sweet watermelon at the end of the
race to thirsty runners. The positive response to getting hydrating
watermelon at the end of a tough run was overwhelming! A big
thanks to the SC Watermelon Association, Ms. Ann Bryant and SC
Queen Brooke Allender for your hard work in coordinating this
promotion and for being amazing hosts!
After that, Queen Jennifer spent some time in Atlanta at the Sutherland
Food Service show promoting the association. She also interviewed
with the Radio Disney morning show “Kid’s Concern” to talk about
why parents should encourage their kids to eat watermelon! Jennifer
also visited Bibb County’s Skyview Elementary school and taught the
students there how watermelon is actually a vegetable, and that it’s not
only sweet and delicious, but also nutritious!
We’ve also been traveling around the state with the Georgia Grown
Farmers Market Showcase events. There, Queen Jennifer has been
handing out watermelon and hosting the ever-popular seed spit
contests! Earlier this June, Queen Jennifer also teamed up with
Alabama Queen Montana Savage in Fort Benning for a jam packed
“Family Fitness” Day at the Commissary. The girls were made
great use of their stay showing customers how to pick out the best
watermelon, teaching safe handling techniques, and of course,
sampling and selling lots of watermelon!
Coming up this summer, Jennifer will travel to Kennesaw and
Athens for festival and grocery store hop at Krogers and at various
July 4th celebrations! She’ll interview with 11 Alive in Atlanta,
travel to Toronto with Longos and again later in the summer with
Loblaw. We’ll also be active stateside, continuing our tour with
farmers markets, and helping honor Mr. Jerry Moore at the first
annual Watermelon Crawl
5K in Tifton in July.
We’re excited about what
the summer brings! Stay
tuned for more updates,
and let us know how we
can continue to work
