Greetings from North Carolina,
NC Watermelon Queen, Breanna Williams, is off to a busy
season promoting watermelons. After being crowned at the state
convention in March, Breanna attended the National Watermelon Promotion Board Queen training in Orlando, FL. The
NWPB staff did an excellent job of helping the new state queens
to better understand the industry and how to promote watermelons in their states. This training is a great opportunity for all the
state queen’s to get to know each other and discuss their many
activities to come for the season.
Queen Breanna’s trip to Charleston, SC for the Cooper River
Bridge Run was a huge success. The South Carolina Watermelon Association, Ann Bryant and SC Queen Brooke were great
hosts for the event. Breanna enjoyed distributing watermelon
samples and talking with attendees at the run’s “Health and Fitness Expo”. Rising early on the day of the run, all the queens
worked really hard giving out watermelon to all the runners at
the conclusion of the race. The watermelon cups, supplied by
the SC Watermelon Association, were a big hit with the runners and they were very thankful to have the hydrating value of
watermelon after the event.
Queen Breanna has also been busy back home in North Carolina. By special invitation, Breanna was asked to speak with the
NC Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler and the NCDA
department heads about the NC Watermelon Association Queen
Scholarship Pageant and the industry. National Tourism Week
found Breanna visiting two NC Welcome Centers to share watermelon samples, recipes and nutrition information with travels
coming to our state. The NC Department of Agriculture’s “Got
to be NC Festival” draws thousands of consumers to the NC
State Fairgrounds to learn more about NC agriculture products.
During the festival Breanna was on hand to discuss NC watermelons. She even had the opportunity to take part in the antique
tractor parade by riding in the NCDA “BIG Shopping Cart”.
Retail promotions have also been a part of our spring activities.
Breanna spent a day at the Fort Bragg South Commissary promoting watermelons and distributing information to shoppers.
Queen Breanna was invited to the Delhaize (Food Lion) spring
watermelon kickoff event at the company’s corporate office in
Salisbury, NC. Our friend Ross Chastain was also at the promotion and together they interacted with the corporate office staff
distributing watermelon samples and educational materials.
Summer is here and Queen Breanna is excited about all the
promotional events to come. We hope to see you all during the
