Our March calendar started off with a wonderful trip to visit our
neighbors in North Carolina at the North Carolina Watermelon Association annual convention held in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. We would like to
welcome Breanna Williams into our watermelon family.
Next Brooke headed out to Columbia and our State Farmers Market
for the annual Commissioner’s BBQ Cup. Brooke was honored to be a
judge in the wings portion of the contest. Needless to say, we did not go
home hungry and were able to visit with many friends as well as meet new
March ended with a trip to Orlando, Florida and Queen Training.
Brooke Bell joined us for this trip and the girls enjoyed a full day of training presented by the NWPB and then a wonderful night of dining with the
whole group at Buca di Beppo.
April opened with a huge event for South Carolina. The Cooper River
Bridge Run, a 10k run with 40,000 runners, was a great success and we
plan to make it an annual event for our state. I want to thank all of the
wonderful queens and coordinators as well as association members and
volunteers who attended and helped to make this the success that it was.
We learned a great deal with this first event and hope that all of our sister
queens/coordinators will continue to join us in the future. In-store promotions with Bi-Lo as well as an appearance by Brooke and Ross Chastain on
Low Country Live, WCIV-TV/ABC, News 4 were also fulfilled during this
Brooke Allender and Brooke Bell attended the Taste of South Carolina
at the State Capitol on April 30th. This is a yearly event where our Congressman and Senators get to sample delicious food from our growers and
vendors. The girls did a wonderful job of passing out promotional materials and promoting our product to the large crowds.
On May 2-3, Brooke was in Beaufort, S.C. for the Taste of Beaufort that
included a 5k run that also helped to put the “Watermelon Fuels Athletes”
program out to the public. This has been very successful and well received
this year and we hope to continue to promote this program in the future,
especially to our schools and athletic events.
Tampa/St. Petersburg was the next stop on May 8th-11th. Debra Harrison and Meagan Morgan were wonderful hosts to Brooke and I, as well
as Eleanor Bullock and Brandi Harrison. We had a quick visit with John
Lapide on Thursday evening and made an early morning appearance at
the Moffitt Cancer Center with the Chastain family. A generous donation
was made to the facility for research purposes in honor of Becky Chastain.
Brooke, Meagan and Brandi judged the DeSoto County Princess pageant
on Friday night in Arcadia and then it was on to St. Petersburg for 2 days
of The Taste of Pinellas and a visit to All Children’s Hospital. Thank you
Debra and Meagan for such a wonderful promotion.
Tuesday, May 20th, Brooke was in Elgin, SC, at Bookman Elementary School where she read and passed out watermelon slices to the entire
kindergarten classes. Former SC Watermelon Queen, Summers Slaton
McBride is a teacher at Bookman and organized the event.
Brooke was in Columbia, SC on May 24th-25th for Bi-Lo in-store
promotions and then it was back to Greenville, SC for Memorial Day and a
live appearance on “Your Carolina” WSPA, Channel 7.
June 4th and 5th were spent at Monarch Elementary School in Simpsonville, SC, cutting melons for 2 field days and over 800 students. This was
a very well received promotion since Monarch was one of the few Health
Science elementary schools in South Carolina. Many thanks to Rusty
Kinard for transporting the melons from Melon 1 in Barnwell, SC to the
school and thanks to Hamy Dicks for sending the melons up from Florida.
An early morning live appearance on The Morning News, WLTS, Channel 19 in Columbia, SC, followed on Friday, May 6th. Brooke spoke about
the “Watermelon Fuels Athletes” program and also prepared a recipe. Saturday, June 7th, found us in Union, SC at another Bi-Lo in-store promotion.
Brooke appeared on The Peggy Denny Show (WGGS, Channel 16)
on Monday, June 9th, preparing 5 recipes during the 26 minute segment.
Peggy was delighted with Brooke as well as the delicious watermelon
recipes that she prepared.
We traveled to Sumter, SC on Tuesday, June 10th, where Brooke
made another live appearance on Making It Grow (SCETV) with Amanda
McNulty and the rest of the crew from the Clemson Extension Program.
Brooke prepared 3 recipes at this appearance.
June 14th-15th, had us in Myrtle Beach and N. Myrtle Beach for in-store
promotions at Bi-Lo as well as a new Lowe’s Food Store.
Brooke has many more promotions ahead and is looking forward to the
remainder of the summer. She especially is looking forward to the upcoming farms visits and visiting with our SC watermelon family as they start
harvesting their watermelon crops.
Wishing everyone a very successful year.
